Overview

The nucleus pulposus is the central, gelatinous portion of the intervertebral disc, surrounded by the anulus fibrosus and situated between adjacent vertebral bodies. Its primary function is to absorb axial loads and provide a cushion that maintains the height and flexibility of the spine[1][2][3][5]. Compositionally, it consists of proteoglycans, collagen fibers (type II), and water-rich extracellular matrix, transitioning to a more fibrous state with age[2][3]. It has no direct blood supply or innervation, receiving nutrition via diffusion[2][3]. Pathological changes, such as herniation, can lead to clinical symptoms, but it is not a molecular target for drugs.
