Nudix hydrolase 6 (NUDT6) is a member of the Nudix hydrolase enzyme family, expressed predominantly in mitochondria and involved in cellular metabolism and regulation. NUDT6 is encoded on the opposite strand of the FGF2 gene and acts as an antisense RNA, potentially regulating the expression of fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2), a key growth factor involved in neuroectoderm development, angiogenesis, and tumor proliferation. NUDT6 expression is inversely correlated with FGF2 and may exert antiproliferative and hormone-regulatory actions, particularly in the pituitary gland, independent of FGF2 function. The precise substrates and enzymatic functions of NUDT6 in humans remain unclear, as comprehensive biochemical screens have not identified a clear hydrolase substrate under physiological conditions. NUDT6 displays tissue-specific expression patterns and may play a context-dependent role in cancer biology, cell proliferation, and possibly other metabolic or regulatory pathways
