Target intelligence / Profile preview
Nutrient absorption modulation refers to the physiological process of regulating the uptake of dietary macronutrients, such as carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins, across the intestinal mucosa (NIDDK, 2023). It is not a single molecular target but rather a therapeutic strategy involving the inhibition of various enzymes and transporters. Key molecular players include alpha-glucosidase for carbohydrate digestion, pancreatic lipase for lipid hydrolysis, and transporters such as NPC1L1 for cholesterol and SGLT1 for glucose (StatPearls, 2023). Drugs like Orlistat and Acarbose act by preventing the breakdown of complex nutrients into absorbable forms, while Ezetimibe directly blocks the transport of cholesterol into enterocytes (PubMed, 2021). This modulation is primarily utilized in the management of metabolic disorders, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. However, the approach is often limited by gastrointestinal side effects, such as steatorrhea and flatulence, resulting from the presence of unabsorbed nutrients in the distal colon (Mayo Clinic, 2022). Consequently, while clinically significant, "Nutrient absorption modulation" describes a functional outcome rather than a specific protein or receptor.
