Target intelligence / Profile preview
The occipital nerve field is an anatomical region of the posterior scalp and upper neck innervated by the greater (C2), lesser (C3), and third occipital nerves (StatPearls, 2022). While it is not a molecular target such as a protein or receptor, it serves as a clinical target for neuromodulation, particularly in the treatment of chronic primary headache disorders like migraine and cluster headache (Wikipedia, 2023; PMC, 2016). Interventions such as Occipital Nerve Field Stimulation (ONFS) utilize subcutaneously implanted electrodes to deliver electrical currents that modulate the trigeminocervical complex, which is a key hub for pain processing where cervical and trigeminal nerves converge (BMC Neurology, 2018). Pharmacological agents such as local anesthetics (e.g., lidocaine) and corticosteroids are also administered to this field to provide short-term relief from occipital neuralgia and cervicogenic pain (StatPearls, 2022). Therapeutic success in this field is often predicted by the patient's response to a diagnostic nerve block, making it a functional rather than a molecular target (Neurotherapeutics, 2017).
Neuromodulation of the trigeminocervical complex through peripheral nerve stimulation or local blockade of voltage-gated sodium channels.
