Octanoate is a straight-chain saturated fatty acid anion that is the conjugate base of octanoic acid (also known as caprylic acid). It has a molecular formula of C8H15O2- and a molecular weight of approximately 143.20 g/mol. Octanoate is believed to block adipogenesis and has roles as both a human metabolite and a Saccharomyces cerevisiae metabolite. It is commonly found in the form of sodium octanoate (sodium caprylate) or other salts such as lithium octanoate. Octanoate is significant in biochemical studies, particularly in examining lipid-protein interactions within cellular membranes. It has applications in colloidal chemistry for investigating the formation and stability of micelles and bilayers in various aqueous environments. Additionally, it is used as a protein stabilizer for molecules such as albumin and fibrinogen and has potential antimicrobial properties.
