Overview

The octopamine receptor is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) primarily found in invertebrates, especially insects. It mediates the actions of octopamine, which serves as the functional analog of norepinephrine/adrenaline in these organisms. Octopamine receptors are structurally and functionally related to mammalian adrenergic receptors and may represent an evolutionary precursor to them. They are classified into several main types: OctαR, OAMB, OctβR, and TyrR. Octopaminergic signaling regulates a wide range of behaviors and physiological processes, including memory formation, sleep regulation, aggression, and reproduction. No true orthologous octopaminergic GPCR exists in vertebrates, but trace amine-associated receptors (TAARs) can bind octopamine.
