Overview

Ocular epithelial cells form the surface layer of the eye, comprising the corneal and conjunctival epithelia. These cells create a physical and biochemical barrier against environmental insults, help maintain hydration and smoothness via secretion of membrane-associated and secreted mucins, and participate in innate immune defense. The apical glycocalyx, rich in mucins such as MUC1, MUC4, and MUC16, provides lubrication and prevents pathogen adhesion[1][2][3].
