Ocular epithelial cells are specialized epithelial cells that line and protect various surfaces of the eye, most notably the corneal epithelium. These cells form a critical barrier between the external environment and the internal structures of the eye, playing essential roles in protection, maintenance of transparency, wound healing, and sensory function. The corneal epithelium consists of five to seven cell layers with a total thickness of approximately 50–60 μm, composed of basal columnar cells, wing (polyhedral) cells, and superficial squamous cells. Their unique properties enable them to serve as both guardians against environmental insults and facilitators for rapid repair following injury—critical features given their exposed anatomical location on one of our most vital sensory organs.
