It forms the substrate for specialized glycocalyx components, especially membrane-associated mucins, which serve essential roles in hydration, tear film stability, lubrication, and barrier protection[1][4]. This membrane is highly specialized, featuring microplicae and microvilli that increase surface area and capacity to bind water via glycoproteins[3]. Disease states such as dry eye and ocular surface disorders are associated with alterations in the mucin coat and glycocalyx structure, compromising barrier function and tear stability[1][4]. However, the plasma membrane itself is not an accepted molecular target for therapeutic intervention; rather, membrane-associated proteins (e.g., mucins MUC1, MUC4, MUC16) are the actionable targets in ocular surface biology[1][2][4].
