Overview

The ocular surface cellular components represent a complex anatomical and functional unit comprising the corneal epithelium, conjunctival epithelium, limbus, and the tear-producing glands such as goblet cells and meibomian glands (Gipson, 2007, PubMed). This integrated system serves as the primary interface between the eye and the external environment, providing a physical and immunological barrier while maintaining the optical transparency necessary for vision (Pflugfelder & Paiva, 2017, PubMed). The cellular components are responsible for the production and stabilization of the pre-ocular tear film, which lubricates the surface and provides essential nutrients (StatPearls, 2023). While it is the site of action for numerous ophthalmic therapies, it is not a single molecular target but rather a collection of diverse cell types and tissues. Pathological changes in these components lead to ocular surface diseases, characterized by inflammation, tear film instability, and potential vision loss (NIH/NEI, 2023). Therapeutic interventions typically target specific molecular pathways within these cells, such as T-cell mediated inflammation or mucin secretion, to restore homeostasis (PubChem).
