Overview

Ocular surface epithelial cell hydration is the physiological process that maintains the water content and wettability of the corneal and conjunctival epithelial cells. This process relies on mucins (secreted and transmembrane), which create a hydrophilic environment that retains the tear film, provides lubrication, and protects the ocular surface. Disruption of this process leads to dry eye disease and other ocular surface disorders.
