Overview

Tear film stabilization and lubrication refer to the maintenance of a healthy, stable tear film on the ocular surface. The tear film is essential for optical clarity, comfort, and protection of the eye. It consists of three main layers: lipid (outermost), aqueous (middle), and mucin (innermost). Each layer plays a distinct role in stabilizing the tear film and ensuring proper lubrication. Disruption in any component can lead to instability—manifesting as dry eye disease—with symptoms including irritation, blurred vision, discomfort or damage to ocular surfaces. Treatments aim at restoring/stabilizing all layers. While not a single molecular target, the overall process is a therapeutic target for dry eye disease.
