The ocular surface mucin layer is a critical component of the tear film that coats the corneal and conjunctival epithelia. It consists primarily of high-molecular-weight glycoproteins called mucins, which are either secreted into the tear film (MUC5AC, MUC7) or anchored to epithelial cell membranes (MUC1, MUC4, MUC16). This layer plays essential roles in maintaining ocular surface health, stability, and defense, providing lubrication, barrier protection, hydrophilicity, tear film stability, clearance of debris, and osmosensing. Deficiency or dysfunction can lead to dry eye disease and increased risk of infection/inflammation.
