Overview

The ocular surface mucin production pathway encompasses the synthesis, glycosylation, and secretion of several mucins (such as MUC1, MUC4, MUC16—membrane-associated, and MUC5AC, MUC7—secreted forms) by conjunctival and corneal epithelial cells and goblet cells. Mucins are large, glycosylated proteins that maintain the wettability, barrier function, and overall homeostasis of the ocular surface. Their production is essential for tear film stability, defense against pathogens, lubrication, debris removal, and prevention of epithelial damage. Alteration in mucin production is central to diseases such as dry eye and ocular allergy. However, "Ocular Surface Mucin Production Pathway" is not a single molecular entity that can directly serve as a therapeutic target in the way that receptors or enzymes are; rather, the pathway comprises multiple molecular targets (different mucin genes, regulatory enzymes, and signaling molecules involved in expression and secretion).
