Overview

Ocular surface mucins are a family of high-molecular-weight glycoproteins crucial for maintaining the health and function of the eye's surface. They are essential components of the tear film, providing lubrication, hydration, and protection. They are classified into secreted (gel-forming and soluble) and membrane-associated (cell surface) types, each with distinct but complementary roles in maintaining ocular surface homeostasis. Deficiencies or alterations in mucin expression are implicated in various ocular surface diseases, particularly dry eye disease.
