The ocular surface mucous membrane is a complex layer composed primarily of mucins, including secreted gel-forming mucins (e.g., MUC5AC) produced by conjunctival goblet cells and membrane-associated mucins (e.g., MUC1, MUC4, MUC16) anchored to epithelial cell surfaces. This membrane plays a critical role in maintaining ocular surface health by providing hydration, lubrication, barrier protection, and clearance of debris and pathogens. Alterations in the quantity or quality of this membrane are implicated in diseases such as dry eye syndrome.
