Overview

The ocular surface physical lubrication system is a complex, multi-layered mechanism that minimizes friction between the eyelid and the globe during blinking and eye movements. It relies on the tear film (lipid, aqueous, and mucin layers), glycocalyx, and the mucoaqueous pool to provide a smooth, hydrated surface that protects the ocular surface epithelium, maintains optical clarity, and facilitates debris removal. Dysfunction of this system leads to dry eye disease and other ocular surface disorders.
