Overview

Ocular tissue photocoagulation (commonly referred to as laser photocoagulation or retinal laser photocoagulation) is a surgical technique in which focused laser energy is directed at specific regions of the retina or other ocular tissues to intentionally produce controlled burns or scarring. The primary goals are to seal leaking or abnormal blood vessels, prevent neovascularization (abnormal new vessel growth), ablate ischemic or diseased tissue, and create adhesive scars that stabilize retinal tears or detachments[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Commonly treated conditions include diabetic retinopathy, macular edema, retinal tears, retinal vein occlusions, and retinal tumors. It may also be used in retinopathy of prematurity and other exudative retinopathies[4][5]. The procedure is performed using various wavelengths and types of lasers, such as argon, diode, krypton, or YAG lasers, with application parameters tailored to the clinical indication[4][6][9].
