Odorant-binding protein 2a is a small, secreted, extracellular protein encoded by the *OBP2A* gene on human chromosome 9, and is a member of the lipocalin superfamily. OBP2A binds and transports small, hydrophobic volatile molecules—commonly odorants—through the nasal mucus to olfactory receptors, facilitating the initial step of odor detection. The protein displays higher affinity for aldehydes and large fatty acids, possibly acting also as a scavenger for toxic or high-concentration odors. OBP2A functions as a monomer in the nasal mucus and binds a variety of odorant classes. Although alternative splicing for this gene has been described, the biological relevance of these variants remains undetermined.
