Overview

Odorant-binding protein 2b (OBP2B) is a small, soluble, extracellular protein in humans, classified within the lipocalin family. It is encoded by the OBP2B gene and is thought to function in the binding and transport of small, hydrophobic, volatile molecules (odorants) across the nasal mucus to olfactory receptors, thus facilitating the sensory perception of smell. OBP2B is primarily active in the extracellular space and is predicted to play a role in chemosensory behavior. While closely related odorant-binding proteins are critical for olfaction in a variety of organisms, there is no direct evidence establishing OBP2B as a therapeutic target, nor is it currently associated with human disease or drug interactions. It does not belong to the major canonical receptor, enzyme, or transporter molecular target classes.
