Overview

Odorant receptor 59b (Or59b) is a chemosensory receptor expressed in the olfactory sensory neurons of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. Unlike mammalian olfactory receptors which are G protein-coupled receptors, insect ORs like Or59b function as heteromeric ligand-gated ion channels composed of a variable odor-binding subunit and a constant co-receptor known as Orco (UniProt: P82984; Sato et al., 2008). Or59b is specifically tuned to detect a narrow range of volatile chemicals, with methyl acetate and certain other short-chain esters identified as its most potent agonists (Hallem & Carlson, 2006). The receptor is located on the dendrites of sensory neurons within the fly's antennae, where it converts chemical signals from the environment into electrical activity (FlyBase: FBgn0037014). While Or59b is not a target for human clinical therapies, it is a significant subject of research in neurobiology for understanding how the brain encodes sensory information. Additionally, it represents a potential target for the development of novel insect repellents or attractants aimed at controlling pest populations or disease vectors (Hallem & Carlson, 2006; Sato et al., 2008).
