Olea europaea pollen allergen refers to a set of proteins found in olive tree (Olea europaea) pollen that are potent triggers of IgE-mediated allergic reactions, particularly respiratory allergies such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. The most clinically significant among these is Ole e 1, a member of the extensin family, which plays a role in fertilization and pollen tube development as well as acting as a major aeroallergen in sensitized individuals[2][4]. Other defined allergens include Ole e 6 (well-characterized 50-residue protein, structure solved by NMR), Ole e 13 (thaumatin-like protein involved in pathogen defense), and Ole e 15 (cyclophilin-type protein with peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase activity)[1][3][5]. Olea europaea pollen allergens are responsible for seasonal pollinosis, with risks exacerbated in regions where olive cultivation is widespread. While they are not therapeutic targets such as receptors or enzymes, they are important as diagnostic markers and targets for allergen-specific immunotherapy[4].
