Overview

Olfactomedin-like protein 2B is a secreted glycoprotein encoded by the OLFML2B gene on human chromosome 1q23.3[1][2]. It is a member of the olfactomedin domain-containing protein family, which includes more than a dozen extracellular proteins often involved in neural and ocular development, as well as extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions[1][5]. OLFML2B is closely related to OLFML2A, and both are sometimes referred to as photomedins due to their expression in retinal tissue[1]. OLFML2B demonstrates broad tissue expression, especially in the retina (ganglion cell and inner nuclear layers, inner segment of the photoreceptor layer, and retinal pigmented epithelium)[1]. Functionally, the protein is known to bind preferentially to extracellular matrix components such as chondroitin sulfate-E and heparin[1][5]. The precise biological function of OLFML2B remains to be elucidated, but, like other olfactomedin domain-containing proteins, it may participate in cell-matrix adhesion, neural differentiation, or tissue patterning[1][5]. There is currently no evidence supporting its use as a therapeutic target or as a clinically actionable biomarker.

Disease associations

There is currently no strong evidence linking OLFML2B directly to major disease areas such as cancer, neurodegeneration, or cardiovascular disease, but olfactomedin domain-containing proteins have been broadly implicated in development, neurogenesis, tumorigenesis, and some human disorders. OLFML2B’s specific disease associations are unproven.
