The Olfactory gland (Bowman's gland) is a branched tubuloalveolar gland located in the lamina propria of the olfactory mucosa beneath the olfactory epithelium[1][3]. Its primary function is to secrete a serous, protein-rich fluid (mucus) that provides lubrication, filters inhaled air, dissolves odorant molecules, and supplies odorant-binding proteins. These secretions also include immune and protective factors such as lysozyme, lactoferrin, and IgA, helping defend the epithelium from pathogens and particulate matter[1][3][6]. The mucus produced by olfactory glands is essential for the transport and detection of odorants by olfactory sensory neurons but the gland itself is not a molecular receptor, enzyme, or typical therapeutic target. Dysfunction of olfactory glands and the overlying epithelium is associated with anosmia (loss of smell) and may contribute to general olfactory disorders[3][6].
