Overview

Olfactory receptor 13C5 (OR13C5) is a human protein encoded by the *OR13C5* gene, and is part of the extensive olfactory receptor gene family. These receptors are integral membrane proteins that belong to the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily, characterized by their seven transmembrane domains. In the human olfactory system, olfactory receptors, including OR13C5, interact with odorant molecules in the nose. This interaction initiates neuronal signaling via G protein-coupled mechanisms, ultimately resulting in the perception of smell. Each receptor is thought to be activated by a set of odorant molecules, though the precise ligand specificity of OR13C5 is not clearly established in the literature. The gene itself arises from a single coding exon, as is common for members of this family. Olfactory receptors are generally not considered tractable therapeutic targets due to their specialized function in olfaction and lack of evidence for involvement in major diseases outside of sensory perception.

Mechanism of action

None established for clinical drugs; in the nose, binds odorants and induces G protein-mediated transduction, but not targeted by therapeutics

03

Biological functions

Signal transduction (via GPCR pathway)Detection of chemical stimulus involved in sensory perception of smell
04

Disease associations

Other: There are limited direct disease associations; one reported disease association is "Developmental And Epileptic Encephalopathy 4", but olfactory receptors generally are not considered key drug targets for common therapeutics.
