It is responsible for detecting specific odorant molecules, especially cis-3-hexen-1-ol, a compound with a characteristic "green, cut grass" smell released by wounded plants[1][2][3]. Variation in the OR2J3 gene affects individual sensitivity to this odorant, and certain variants (T113A and R226Q) can substantially reduce or abolish this sensory perception[2][3]. OR2J3 initiates signal transduction upon ligand binding by activating G proteins, leading to neuronal signals that are interpreted as distinct odors.
