Olfactory receptor 51B2 (OR51B2)

Target
OR51B2
Molecular classification
G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), Olfactory receptor, Transmembrane receptor
01

Overview

Olfactory receptor 51B2 is a transmembrane G protein-coupled receptor expressed in the olfactory epithelium, where it interacts with odorant molecules to initiate a neuronal response that leads to the perception of smell. OR51B2 shares the characteristic 7-transmembrane domain architecture with other olfactory and neurotransmitter/hormone GPCRs and is derived from a large single coding-exon gene family. Notably, as of recent knowledge, OR51B2 remains an orphan receptor, meaning no specific odorant ligands are identified for this protein. In some individuals, OR51B2 is a segregating pseudogene, indicating allelic variation in functionality. There is no evidence for therapeutic targeting or a direct role in common diseases.
