Olfactory receptor 51B4 (OR51B4)

Target
OR51B4
Molecular classification
G protein-coupled receptor, Receptor, Odorant receptor
01

Overview

Olfactory receptor 51B4 is a member of the largest gene family in the human genome encoding olfactory receptors, which share a 7-transmembrane domain structure typical of GPCRs. These receptors detect odorant molecules in the nasal cavity and mediate the transduction of chemical signals into neuronal activity, enabling the sense of smell. Although biochemically related to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, OR51B4 is not currently known to play a direct role in disease or therapeutic interventions. Its main function is restricted to olfactory perception, and as with other olfactory receptors, it exhibits low ligand selectivity, enabling the detection of a wide variety of small chemical compounds (such as terpenes, esters, acids, and aldehydes) by combinatorial receptor activation.
