Overview

Olfactory receptor 51B6 (OR51B6) is a member of the large family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) involved in the detection of odorant molecules in the nasal olfactory epithelium[5][4]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR51B6 possesses a seven-transmembrane domain structure typical of GPCRs[5][4]. These receptors initiate neuronal responses by recognizing specific odorant ligands, facilitating the sense of smell[5][4]. Although the majority of functional research and structural data have focused on other closely related receptors such as OR51E2, the basic properties and classification apply to OR51B6 as well[3]. Olfactory receptors are primarily responsible for odorant signal transduction, but emerging research suggests that some may also have roles in extranasal tissues; however, as of current sources, OR51B6-specific disease associations or therapeutic uses are not identified[3]. There are no known drugs targeting OR51B6, and it is not established as a biomarker or safety concern for therapeutic development.
