Overview

Olfactory receptor 5K4 (OR5K4) is a member of the odorant receptor subfamily of G protein-coupled receptors, encoded by the OR5K4 gene on chromosome 3 in humans. Like all olfactory receptors, OR5K4 has a canonical seven-transmembrane domain structure, allowing it to interact with odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium. Upon binding to specific odorants, OR5K4 initiates a G protein-mediated signaling cascade that culminates in the perception of odors by triggering neuronal responses. While olfactory receptors as a class are critical for the sense of smell and are part of the largest multigene family in mammals, there is no current evidence supporting OR5K4 as a therapeutic drug target, nor are there known endogenous or exogenous drugs acting on this receptor. Most biological and mechanistic insights about olfactory receptors come from analogous family members with similar structural motifs.
