Overview

Olfactory receptor 5M8 (OR5M8) is a protein encoded in humans by the OR5M8 gene. It belongs to the family of olfactory receptors, which are members of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily characterized by seven transmembrane domains[2][5]. OR5M8 is expressed in the olfactory epithelium of the nose, where it recognizes specific odorant molecules and initiates G protein-mediated signal transduction, leading to a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. Like other olfactory receptors, it arises from a single coding-exon gene and helps mediate the complex process of odor recognition. OR5M8, as with most human olfactory receptors, is part of the largest gene family in the genome and is primarily involved in sensory signaling with no direct disease implications or known drug interactions[2][5].
