Overview

Olfactory receptor 7D4 (OR7D4) is a member of the olfactory receptor gene family in humans and encodes a receptor that detects specific odorant molecules in the nose, initiating a neuronal response responsible for the perception of smell[1][10][5]. It is part of the large G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily and specifically recognizes and mediates transduction of signals from steroid-like odorants such as androstadienone and androstenone[1][2]. These receptors have a 7-transmembrane domain structure similar to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors[1][3][5]. OR7D4 shows polymorphisms, with some variants leading to reduced sensitivity to specific odorants, affecting the perception and aversiveness of smells ("sweaty" odor)[1]. There is no evidence that OR7D4 is a therapeutic drug target, nor are there established drugs or biomarkers involving this receptor in clinical use[1][10][7]. Its primary physiological role is in odorant recognition rather than pathological or pharmacological processes.
