Overview

Olfactory receptor family 1 subfamily A member 1 (OR1A1) is a member of the largest transmembrane protein family in the human genome—the olfactory receptors—which are part of the class A (rhodopsin-like) G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). OR1A1 recognizes a range of odorant molecules, including various aliphatic alcohols, aldehydes, and ketones, triggering signal transduction cascades that lead to perception of smell. It has a seven-transmembrane domain structure and functions in the nose, with broad ligand specificity for molecules such as citronellal, octanal, heptanal, dihydrojasmone, nonanal, musks, and thiols. It is not associated with direct therapeutic applications but is studied for understanding GPCR function and olfactory binding mechanisms[1][2][3][4].

Mechanism of action

Agonists (odorants) bind to receptor, activate G protein-coupled signaling, leading to cAMP increase and neuron depolarization

03

Biological functions

Signal transductionOlfactory perception (odorant recognition and neuronal response)
04

Disease associations

Other (no established role in common diseases; possible subtle roles in olfactory disorders or very rare genetic syndromes but not well-characterized)
05

Safety considerations

None prominently reported; not targeted in drug development so safety profiles or toxicity issues are not applicable
06

Interacting drugs

None known as approved therapeutic agents; interacts with odorant molecules but not drugs in a pharmacological context
07

Biomarkers

None established for patient selection or efficacy monitoring (not used clinically as a biomarker)
