Overview

Olfactory receptor family 1 subfamily D member 2 (OR1D2) is a G protein-coupled receptor that detects odorant molecules in the nose, initiating neuronal signaling that leads to the perception of smell[2][3]. It is part of the largest gene family in the genome and features a 7-transmembrane domain structure like other receptors for neurotransmitters and hormones[2][3]. In addition to its role in olfaction, OR1D2 is expressed in human spermatozoa, where it has been shown to mediate sperm chemotaxis, possibly in response to specific odorants such as bourgeonal[1][2]. OR1D2 is a broadly tuned receptor, capable of responding to a large variety of structurally diverse chemical compounds, without a clear pattern of agonist structure or organoleptic characteristics; many identified ligands are floral, fruity, or citrus in character[1]. There is currently no established therapeutic targeting, interacting drugs, or known biomarker or safety concerns for OR1D2.
