Overview

The olfactory receptor family 1 subfamily D member 3 pseudogene (OR1D3P) is a nonfunctional member of the olfactory receptor gene family in humans. Olfactory receptors overall are part of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily involved in the detection of odorants and initiation of smell signaling in the olfactory epithelium. However, OR1D3P is categorized as a pseudogene, indicating it does not encode an active or functional receptor protein and thus does not participate in canonical olfactory or other signaling pathways. While olfactory receptors are of significant interest for their roles in chemosensation and have been noted for ectopic expression in non-olfactory tissues, no functional or disease-related role has been attributed to OR1D3P specifically. OR1D3P should not be confused with active olfactory receptors (such as OR1D2 or OR17-4), which do have potential biological or pharmacological roles. The designation "pseudogene" refers to a gene that resembles a functional gene but is noncoding and nonfunctional due to mutations or truncations. Multiple resources and gene nomenclature authorities consistently define OR1D3P as a pseudogene.
