Overview

Olfactory receptor family 1 subfamily D member 4 (OR1D4) is a member of the large family of olfactory receptors that interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses underlying the perception of smell[1][7][8]. These proteins are part of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily and share a canonical seven-transmembrane domain structure that is characteristic of GPCRs[1][3]. The OR1D4 gene can function as either a protein-coding gene or a segregating pseudogene depending on the allele, with some encoding a functional olfactory receptor while others are non-functional[1]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR1D4 is responsible for recognizing odorants and transducing their signals via G protein-mediated mechanisms[1][3][7][8]. There are no current known therapeutic drugs directly targeting OR1D4, nor is it established as a therapeutic target or biomarker in disease. OR1D4’s primary role is in mediating sensory perception of smell, and it does not have direct implications in common human diseases or therapeutic applications[1][7][8].
