Overview

Olfactory receptor family 1 subfamily E member 1 (OR1E1) is a human protein that functions as a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) in the olfactory system. As part of the largest gene family in the human genome, OR1E1 detects odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium and initiates a neuronal response via G protein signaling, ultimately leading to the perception of smell. Olfactory receptors, including OR1E1, share the canonical seven transmembrane domains characteristic of GPCRs and are responsible for ligand (odorant) recognition and signal transduction. Although olfactory receptors are essential for the sense of smell, there is no evidence that OR1E1 is directly involved in major disease mechanisms, targeted by drugs, or used as a clinical biomarker.
