Overview

Olfactory receptor family 1 subfamily E member 2 (OR1E2) is a member of the olfactory receptor (OR) family, which comprises the largest group of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) in the human genome[2][3][4][5]. OR1E2 is a protein-coding gene expressed in the nasal olfactory epithelium, where it interacts with odorant molecules to initiate neuronal signaling and trigger the perception of smell[3][4][5]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR1E2 possesses a characteristic 7-transmembrane domain structure and is responsible for G protein-mediated transduction of odorant signals[3][4][5]. Beyond its well-established sensory function, recent research suggests that some olfactory receptors, including ORs like OR1E2, may be expressed in extranasal tissues (such as brain, pancreas, and testes) and have roles in nonolfactory physiological processes where dysregulation could contribute to various diseases, including cancer[2]. However, there are currently no well-characterized drugs targeting OR1E2, nor established mechanisms of action, biomarkers, or safety concerns in therapeutics. OR1E2 has many alternative names, as listed above, reflecting overlapping gene symbol conventions in genomic databases[3].
