Overview

Olfactory receptor family 1 subfamily J member 1 (OR1J1) is a human protein encoded by the *OR1J1* gene[6]. It belongs to the large olfactory receptor family, specifically to the family 1 subfamily J group. Olfactory receptors are members of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily, characterized by their seven-transmembrane domain structure[1][2][3][5][6]. They interact with odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium to initiate neuronal responses that ultimately result in the perception of smell. This transduction involves recognition of specific chemicals and signal relay via G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. The nomenclature for olfactory receptor genes is species-specific and independent between organisms. There is no current evidence of clinical drug interactions or biomedical utility for OR1J1 beyond its fundamental sensory role in olfaction. OR1J1 has been noted in genetic association with color agnosia, but not linked to common disease categories such as cancer, inflammation, or neurodegenerative diseases[3][6].
