Olfactory receptor family 1 subfamily J member 4 (OR1J4) is a member of the olfactory receptor protein family, which mediates the detection of odorant molecules in the human nose and initiates the neuronal signaling responsible for the perception of smell. OR1J4, like other olfactory receptors, is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that possesses a seven-transmembrane domain structure characteristic of this family. Olfactory receptors are encoded by single coding-exon genes and represent the largest gene family in the human genome. While their primary function is the detection of airborne chemicals leading to olfactory perception, there is emerging evidence that some olfactory receptors may also participate in non-olfactory physiological processes, but no specific disease associations or therapeutic targeting have been established for OR1J4[3][4][5][2].
