Overview

Olfactory receptor family 1 subfamily K member 1 (OR1K1) is a protein-coding gene that encodes an olfactory receptor, which is part of the large family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) responsible for the detection of odorant molecules in the nose, ultimately leading to a neuronal response that enables the perception of smell. OR1K1, like other olfactory receptors, features a characteristic seven-transmembrane domain structure and mediates signal transduction by coupling to G proteins upon odorant binding. While olfactory receptors form the largest multigene family in the human genome and are structurally homologous to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, OR1K1 itself is not considered a therapeutic drug target and has no known direct disease associations or pharmacological modulators[6][7][4].
