Target intelligence / Profile preview
Olfactory receptor family 1 subfamily L member 1 (OR1L1) is a member of the large olfactory receptor family of G protein-coupled receptors that mediate the sense of smell in humans. OR1L1 is expressed in the olfactory epithelium, where it detects odorant molecules, activates G protein-mediated signal transduction pathways, and generates neuronal signals corresponding to distinct smells. Olfactory receptors share structural features (seven transmembrane domains) with classic neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, but are unique in their diversity, with hundreds of paralogous genes in the human genome. OR1L1 is involved in recognizing specific odorants and is not considered a conventional drug target. It is not linked to major human disease syndromes and does not have known drug or biomarker associations. Clinical interest is generally limited to its fundamental biological role in olfaction rather than pathophysiological or pharmacological applications.
For odorants: Binding to receptor initiates conformational change, activates heterotrimeric G protein, leading to intracellular signal transduction and neuronal depolarization in olfactory sensory neurons. For drugs: Not applicable; olfactory receptors are not therapeutic drug targets.
