Olfactory receptor family 10 subfamily C member 1 (OR10C1)

Olfactory receptor family 10 subfamily C member 1 (OR10C1) is a member of the large olfactory receptor gene family and encodes a seven transmembrane domain G protein-coupled receptor expressed in the olfactory epithelium[1][3][4][5][7]. It binds odors in the nasal cavity, activating intracellular G proteins and initiating neuron signaling that leads to the perception of smell. The gene may be a segregating pseudogene in humans: some individuals possess a functional allele, while others have a version with a premature stop codon resulting in a non-functional protein[1][5]. There is no pathogenic or therapeutic association for OR10C1, but genetic variation in this and other OR genes contributes to individual differences in odor perception[2].
