Overview

Olfactory receptor family 10 subfamily H member 4 (OR10H4) is a protein-coding gene in humans that encodes a member of the olfactory receptor family, which is the largest group of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) in the genome. Like other olfactory receptors, OR10H4 features a 7-transmembrane domain structure and is responsible for the recognition of odorant molecules in the nose, triggering neuronal responses that allow for the perception of different smells. Olfactory receptors are typically activated by volatile compounds and mediate their effects through G protein-dependent signal transduction pathways. While traditionally associated exclusively with olfactory neuroepithelium, recent studies indicate that some olfactory receptors may have physiological roles outside the nose, such as in brain and other tissues, but specific extranasal functions for OR10H4 have not been defined. OR10H4 gene mutations or dysregulation show rare disease associations, but it is generally not considered a major therapeutic or disease biomarker.
