Olfactory receptor family 10 subfamily R member 1 pseudogene (OR10R1P)

Target
OR10R1P
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, G protein-coupled receptor family (nonfunctional)
01

Overview

Olfactory receptor family 10 subfamily R member 1 pseudogene (OR10R1P) is classified as a pseudogene; it resembles a functional olfactory receptor gene but contains mutations that prevent it from producing a functional receptor protein. Olfactory receptors are members of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily and are typically involved in the detection of odorant molecules to initiate neuronal signals in the olfactory system. However, as a pseudogene, OR10R1P does not encode a functional protein and is generally not assigned biological function or considered a therapeutic target. While some pseudogenes in other gene families may exert regulatory roles at the RNA level, such a function has not been reported for OR10R1P, and the majority of human olfactory receptor pseudogenes are regarded as biologically inactive.

Mechanism of action

None

03

Biological functions

None (for this pseudogene); olfactory receptors generally mediate signal transduction in olfactory neurons
04

Disease associations

None known for this pseudogene; functional olfactory receptor pseudogenes are generally considered inert, but rare cases exist where pseudogene transcripts may regulate gene expression
