Olfactory receptor family 10 subfamily S member 1 encodes a protein that detects odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium, initiating signal transduction via G protein-coupled mechanisms. OR10S1 belongs to the large family of olfactory receptors, all of which share a 7-transmembrane domain structure similar to other hormone and neurotransmitter receptors. These receptors play a pivotal role in the sense of smell and may also be involved in nonolfactory physiological processes. Although mostly studied for their role in olfaction, some olfactory receptors—including OR10S1—have been linked to disease processes outside the nervous system, highlighting potential utility in both sensory biology and disease research.
If targeted, drugs would likely act as agonists or antagonists on the GPCR to modulate odorant signal transduction.
