Overview

Olfactory receptor family 10 subfamily X member 1 (OR10X1) is an olfactory receptor protein in humans, encoded by the OR10X1 gene[1][4][5]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR10X1 shares a 7-transmembrane domain structure typical of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs)[1][2][4][5]. Olfactory receptors, including OR10X1, interact with odorant molecules in the nasal cavity and trigger neuronal responses that underpin the perception of smell[1][2][6]. The OR10X1 gene displays allelic variability: some individuals have a functional receptor allele, while in others, the gene is a pseudogene encoding a predicted non-functional protein[1]. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, encompassing hundreds of similar receptors, each with broad but distinct ligand affinities to enable detection of a diverse array of odorants[2][3]. GPCR signaling initiated by these receptors relies on G protein-mediated transduction, leading to neuronal depolarization and signal transmission to the brain[2][3]. Apart from their canonical sensory role, olfactory receptors, in general, have been observed to participate in extranasal physiological processes, but specific non-olfactory functions for OR10X1 have not been established[3]. No drugs or approved therapeutic agents are listed as acting on OR10X1, nor is it currently considered a therapeutic target[3].
