Olfactory receptor family 11 subfamily G member 2 (OR11G2)

Target
OR11G2
Molecular classification
G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), Olfactory receptor, 7-transmembrane domain receptor
01

Overview

Olfactory receptor family 11 subfamily G member 2 (OR11G2) is a G protein-coupled receptor that binds odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium, initiating a neuronal signaling cascade responsible for the perception of smell. It has the typical 7-transmembrane domain structure of olfactory GPCRs, is encoded by a single-exon gene, and is part of the largest gene family in the human genome. OR11G2 is not recognized as a drug target or as being involved in any major human disease. Its main biological role is sensory, mediating signal transduction in response to environmental odorants.

Mechanism of action

Ligand binding (odorant molecules in the nose); Activation of G protein-mediated signal transduction; Initiation of neuronal signaling for olfactory perception

03

Biological functions

Signal transductionOdorant recognitionSensory perception of smell
04

Disease associations

None clearly established in the literature for OR11G2 specifically. Olfactory receptors broadly have minimal links to common human diseases.
05

Safety considerations

None reported. These receptors are not therapeutically targeted and pose minimal direct safety concerns.
06

Interacting drugs

None known; olfactory receptors are primarily activated by odorant molecules (chemical ligands) and not standard therapeutics
07

Biomarkers

None known for clinical use. Expression of olfactory receptor genes is sometimes used in research on tissue specificity and receptor function.
