Overview

The olfactory receptor family 11 subfamily K member 1 pseudogene (OR11K1P) is a member of the olfactory receptor gene family, which encodes G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) characterized by a seven-transmembrane domain structure[5][6][7]. However, OR11K1P is annotated as a pseudogene in the human genome, which means it is predicted to lack coding potential for a functional protein[7][5]. Pseudogenes typically arise by gene duplication or mutation and do not produce functional proteins, though rare exceptions exist for some olfactory receptor pseudogenes in other contexts[1]. Functional olfactory receptors are responsible for detecting odorant molecules in the nose and initiating a signal transduction cascade via G proteins that leads to the perception of smell[7][5]. However, pseudogenes like OR11K1P generally do not mediate such functions, are not therapeutic targets, and have no known roles in disease, pharmacology, or biomarker development[7][5]. Therefore, OR11K1P is not a valid drug target and its main relevance is as a non-coding member of the olfactory receptor superfamily. Although rare olfactory receptor pseudogenes may sometimes be partially functional in specific individuals or species[1], there is no evidence that OR11K1P encodes a functional protein or has therapeutic relevance in humans[7][5].
