Overview

Olfactory receptor family 12 subfamily D member 1 (OR12D1) is a protein of the human olfactory system that recognizes odorant molecules in the nose and mediates the neuronal response triggering the perception of smell. OR12D1 belongs to the large family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), specifically the olfactory receptor family, characterized by seven transmembrane domains and coupling to G-protein signaling pathways. These receptors are encoded by single coding-exon genes and make up the largest gene family in the human genome. For OR12D1, the gene is classified as a "segregating pseudogene," meaning some human individuals have a functional copy while others may have a non-functional version[5]. This protein is not currently considered a therapeutic target for disease, and no known drugs interact with OR12D1. There are also no established safety concerns, mechanisms of drug action, or biomarker roles for this receptor in current clinical or pharmacological literature.
